Getting Work Done Music

Looks like a good time right? Well, it does to me at least. The guy with his pants falling down? That’s Boys Noize, and he’s one of the best Electro music producers around. And yes, he throws amazing parties.

He’s here the weird thing, I’ve been listening to him a lot recently while I’m working—while I write, while I empty my email inbox, while I’m researching stuff on the web, whatever. I listen to a lot of dance music that is at least 120 bpm.

Check out my top 20 artists on Last.fm over the past year. Since scrobbling isn’t supported properly for the iPhone, this is almost entirely from when I’m in front of my laptop.

That’s a lot of dance music, and I was on a serious Girl Talk kick for a while there. When I tell people that I write while listening to Girl Talk, most people think I’m crazy. There’s a lot of non-dance/slower music in there as well, but what this chart doesn’t represent is that most of the time, I’m listening to podcasts and new tracks from blogs, friends, etc., and almost all of that falls in the dance music category. I’d estimate that 90% of what I listen to while working has a bpm of 120 or higher.

Why do I listen to this stuff?

You would think it would be nearly impossible to actually get any work done listening to Girl Talk or Soulwax (one of my favorite live bands by the way) or The Prodigy. Oddly enough, I’m more productive. I think I might just be wired differently than most, but when this music is blaring in my ears, my head starts bouncing, and I’m able to zone everything else out.

If you know me, you know that I move at 100 mph. I just don’t stop moving, ever, both physically and intellectually. I stay up late. I get up early. My mind is always working, typically thinking about my business. I make decisions quickly and start acting on them even more quickly. This type of music just feels in sync with my thought process.

I get some of my best work done at 3 in the morning when no one is around and the music is so loud that it will probably effect my hearing someday. This is when I’m most productive. Music is a key part of my life. Without it, I don’t know if I’d actually be able to work the hours that I do. From conversations I’ve had with others and blogs that I’ve read, I think music is a key part of a lot of tech entrepreneurs’ lives. It’s probably why there are so many music startups.

I’m going to leave you with a podcast recommendation, again, by my good friend Supermucho. If you’re interested in mashups, dance, pop, whatever, you need to listen to this.

By the way, what do you listen to when you work?

  • at work i listen to almost anything without lyrics which usually ends up being lounge music or trance or something else completely random.

also, in case anyone is wondering, the philanights link is down, but, fear not, i gotta brand new podcast going up shortly. i'll let you know.
  • Strangely enough, even though I'm a (retro) DJ on the side, I don't listen to much new music anymore. When I do it, it's definitely in the indie/electro vein similar to your list.
  • What are you referring to when you say retro? Also, if you want to hear some good Indie/Electro, Designer Drugs is playing at the Barbary on Tuesday. Should be pretty amazing.
  • My forte is 80s new wave/alternative/synthpop/italo disco - which I have been spinning at Fluid Nightclub for the past 6+ years. Before we know it, though, some of the stuff from the early 90s is going to be considered retro real quick! I like what I have heard of Designer Drugs, I haven't been able to catch them yet. It seems I'm becoming a regular at The Barbary these days, I was just at the last Sorted and [click.] parties.
  • That's awesome. What night do you spin? I haven't been to Fluid in years. I used to be much more into Trance and a little old school House, but now it's mostly Indie/Electro/Mashup.

As for Designer Drugs, ya, they rock. Hands down, they had the best remix of 2008:

The party which they started, Live Forever, is my favorite Barbary party. Unfortunately, that remix caused them to blow up, and this is the first time they've been at the Barbary in forever.
  • I used to like all that Techno/Trance/House stuff, too. Used to go to Josh Wink's nights back in the day. Anyways, I spin every 1st Friday (which is tomorrow night already!). The night is called "Sex Dwarf" (after a Soft Cell song). It's a lot of fun esp. for people (like me) who won't let the 80s die. Haha. No MJ or Madonna, though. We leave that to other DJs. ;)

I will have to make it out to Live Forever one of these days, too. John Redden is a sweetheart; him & his partners are doing pretty well there at the Barbary. Definitely a lot of fun parties with great music there.
  • I'm not in town tomorrow night, but I'll definitely try to make it out sometime! It sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm more than happy to go to a place where I know I'm not going to hear MJ or Madonna.
  • Yeah you can get MJ or Madonna anywhere. I like to break out a lot of Depeche Mode, New Order, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Cure, Duran Duran, Human League, B52s, Devo, The Clash... stuff like that. The dancefloor is always packed! :)
  • Awesome! That sounds like a good night.

By the way, you should definitely check out my buddies site (http://supermucho.com). You might like some of his music/podcast. He's not playing out anywhere regularly right now, but he's trying to find something soon.
  • Cool stuff. I love mashups!!
